Heiress Leases Apartment


After the death of her father in 1918, Alice had no desire to stay alone in his Madison Avenue mansion (today the home of the Polish Embassy).

Her new home was on Park Avenue, uptown from her father’s mansion. The building covered the entire block, from 47th to 48th Streets. The New York Times wrote about it, adding that her father had “a fine residence… opposite the home of J. P. Morgan.” The media were in on the rivalry of De Lamar and Morgan and slipped in this sly note to fan the fire.
